hey friends, if you care about cultural appropriation and the damage it causes, please check out this awesome project!

in 2017 dior copied the design of a traditional romanian coat from the county of bihor and sold it for 30,000 euro, giving no credit to the local artisans. in response, romanian fashion magazine beau monde helped the community create their own brand, bihor couture, which sells the original coat, handmade to order, for 500 euro a piece. they also sell other traditional clothing and jewelry for much more accessible prices (5-45 euro). they’ve been hugely successful so far, and currently have enough pre-orders to cover 4.5 years of work, with 100% of the profits returning to the community.

it’s surprisingly common for big name fashion designers like dior, gaultier, tom ford and altuzarra to copy traditional romanian clothing and sell it for ridiculous prices, with minimal original input, while giving nothing back to the community where these designs originated. it’s completely unfair that a big name designer can just steal so much hard work and misuse it to make huge profits.

please support bihor couture, if not by ordering one of their products, then by spreading the news around. it’s really awesome to see a small community fight back against cultural appropriation so successfully. i hope they carry on for a long time!

Kevin Bridges: A Whole Different Story

…where’s the lie?

From a macroeconomics standpoint, Bridges is completely accurate.

The problem with most Tories (and many Republicans in the US) is that they either have big business interests at heart or have bought the lie that government is like a business. Government is not a business! Microeconomic principles, even ones that apply to entire industries, don’t apply to governments!

Here’s the fundamental macroecomic model of an economy:

Notice that the system is circular. The model shows that the economy inherently needs to be balanced. If some households are making hundreds of times the income of other households, they will put the vast majority of that money into savings and investment.

This is bad for the economy.

Some savings and investment is necessary. But too much means the little green arrows are siphoning off vast portions of the peach demand arrow (”purchases of goods and services”). This means that companies are fighting over a smaller and smaller pie. Even if you heavily fund those companies, many will collapse due to lack of demand for their products, unless they become monopolies and the sole practical source of their product. Monopolies are technically illegal in the US, but we have them anyway because of this problem (and a lack of enforcement).

The other way you can damage the demand arrow is by shifting the proportions of the purple income arrow. Most people make money from wages, so if you significantly decrease those relative to dividends, interest, profits, and rent, you’ll harm the majority of households. In turn, this again decreases the peach arrow because many households only need a set amount of a given product in a year. The fewer households that can afford the products, the lower overall demand, because the remaining households won’t buy up the difference.

Households with average levels of income spend far more money than they save, of necessity, and they do so at a relatively steady rate. This is good for the economy.

Households with incredibly high levels of income - millionaires, etc. - save far more than they spend. They tend to make their money off of dividends, interest, profits, and rents - not wages. Therefore, to improve the economy, including increasing tax revenues for the government, two basic steps are urged by almost all macroeconomists:

1. Increase wages, especially at the lowest end. This expands the tax base and drives up demand for basic goods and services, stabilizing the industries necessary to a decent quality of life: agriculture and food production, clothing, housing, education, transportation, etc.

2. Use progressive taxes, in which those who make the most money, particularly off of dividends, interest, profits, and rents, pay a higher percentage of their income as taxes. This allows that money to be spent directly on goods and services or to be redistributed to poor households, who will in turn spend it on goods and services. In both cases, money that would have gone into savings and investment instead goes into demand. This makes businesses more successful and a large number of households more prosperous. Society as a whole benefits from decreased crime, lower health problems, and improved public goods like education, roads, emergency response, infrastructure, etc.

Macroeconomics is the opposite of an individual business. Individual businesses study how to take the most pie for themselves and keep it. Macroeconomists - and governments - study how to make the pie bigger and distribute it in such a way that society as a whole benefits from the growth.

Conservatives: doing economics wrong for the past several decades by deliberately pretending that knowing how to run a business is anything like knowing how to run a government. Being fiscally cautious and being uneducated do not have to go hand in hand. (I’m both, for example.) But the rhetoric for slashing budgets has been laden with errors and ideology since at least the 1930s, and I’m tired of it.

“Sasha! Your pelt is reddened! The sun has damaged it! We must get you to the doctor to see to it!”
Sasha glanced at their arms and noted that they did indeed have a sunburn. “Aw, man! I forgot sunscreen.”
Brrp waved xer glistening grasping tentacles. “Hurry, to the doctor, we might be able to save it!”
Sasha rolled their eyes but followed the squishy looking alien back to the ship. Aliens freaked out over the most minor of injuries and it was easier to just indulge them until they realized that they were indeed completely fine.
Once inside the med bay Brrp warbled frantically at the doctor. “Their pelt has been damaged by overexposure to UV radiation!”
The doctor’s skin rippled as xe hurriedly began pulling healing creams from the storage cabinets. “Human Sasha, is your pelt removable? Or does it need to remain attached?”
Sasha blinked at the unusual, and frankly creepy, question. “Um. It has to remain attached. Really though, it’s just a bit of sunburn. My skin might peel for a little bit but it’ll heal right up.”
The doctor and Brrp faded to a mint green color in horror. “You will shed your pelt? But… how will you survive without it? There are no donor humans on the ship!”
“It’ll grow back. I’m constantly regrowing skin.”
The doctor wiggled in an concerned expression. “Human Sasha, constantly needing new pelts due to neglect is unhealthy for both your pelt and yourself. You should take better care of it.”
“Oh I do, it’s just how human skin works. We grow new skin and the old skin sheds off all the time.”
“It does not sadden you to constantly lose your protector like that?” Brrp was still minty green.
“It’s just skin.”
The doctor snorted in disapproval. “You should be more respectful to your pelts. It did not have to bond with you.”
“Wait? Bond with me?”
The doctor and Brrp exchanged a long-suffering look. “Yes, I’m sure you were taught about how your pelt spawned around the same time you were born and chose to bond with you to protect you in exchange for nutrients? It’s basic health.”
Sasha frowned. “Um, no, I was born with it. You guys weren’t born with skin?”
“We do have a delicate skin we are born with, but without the pelt we would too easily succumb to injuries and dehydration. Our pelts offer us protection and hydration out of water in exchange for some of our nutrients.”
“Like, is your pelt an animal?” Sasha was starting to feel a bit queasy.
“It… is a separate organism. We have a symbiotic relationship with Pelts.”
They gaped at the aliens in horror. “You have an entire creature attached to your skin?”
“As everyone does. Exoskeletons are hard to evolve at the same time as survival skills, so Pelts evolved galaxy wide to take advantage of this need.”
“Oh my god! You have parasites!”
“Symbiotic, really now, there is no reason for you to be freaking out like this, you have a Pelt as well and your ancestors had Pelts. I have heard of your Deer Pelts and Bear Pelts.”
“But those were dead! We killed the deer before we took their pelts!”
Brrp faded completely to white. “You killed and stole pelts?”
“I mean, yeah, we weren’t going to wear something alive!” Sasha felt like they needed a shower.
“You do not host a Pelt? None of your species?”
“Exactly! We grow our own skin! We only wore deer pelts like clothes. We grow our own skin, and sometimes the cells die, so we shed them and grow new ones. Like my hair, constantly shedding and growing.”
The doctor quivered. “This is quite frankly a bit horrifying! Never has there been a Pelt-less species discovered before!”
“Honestly, we didn’t even know everyone had a… Pelt. We thought you were just one creature.”
The doctor hesitantly held out a biopsy tool. “May I have a ‘skin’ sample? I would dearly love to study how you survive without a pelt.”
Sasha cringed but nodded. “Uh. Okay.” They held out their arm and winced at the pinch. The doctor quickly placed the sample into one of the machines and wiggled in place as several lights did the sci-fi “doing things” flash
After a minute the doctor eagerly looked at the readout and immediately faded to complete white.
“By the gods living and dead, there’s billions of creatures!”
Sasha grimaced. “Skin flora. We can’t quite get rid of it.”
“There’s at least a thousand different species living on you!”
“Yeah. Gross, right?”
Brrp warbled uncertainly. “So instead of having a Pelt, you grow your own skin, but you still have thousands of species living on you?”
“Yup.”
“Gross.”
